    Project Description
This project will conserve, through outright acquisition, up to 50 acres of key nearshore habitat along the southeastern shore of Totten Inlet in Thurston County. The project parcels include a strategic 1,400 foot segment of undeveloped shoreline, a pocket estuary with a baymouth spit, and roughly 15 acres of freshwater and estuarine wetlands. Approximately half of the 1,400 feet of unarmored shoreline is flanked by high feeder bluffs. The uplands consist of mature Pacific Northwest maritime forest with several freshwater tributaries that connect the forested wetland mosaic to the estuary below. Totten Inlet hosts five species of anadromous fish: native Totten Inlet fall chum, fall chinook (ESA listed), native Totten Inlet winter steelhead (ESA listed), anadromous coastal cutthroat trout, and numerous forage fish species. Totten Inlet is specifically mentioned in numerous plans, including the Chinook & Bull Trout Recovery Approach for the South Puget Sound Nearshore and the Northern Pacific Coast Regional Shorebird Conservation Plan. This project is a component of a South Sound nearshore conservation strategy that has already protected ten miles of functional and intact estuarine and nearshore habitat.
