Since Champion International sold their mill in Klickitat, Washington, biologists have been planning various strategies to allow for fish passage into upper Snyder Creek. Currently, one mile of the lower Snyder Creek remains a cement flume. Now, there is an opportunity to re-establish Snyder Creek's natural stream channel to allow for native steelhead passage. The new owner of the mill is "fish-friendly," and is presently working with a number of agencies and the Yakamas to restore and enhance the site. The objective of this project is to re-establish steelhead and coho salmon populations in Snyder Creek, while also providing rearing and spawning habitat. Elements of the project include installation of metal baffles at various points along Snyder Creek to provide velocity breaks. Also, construct a plunge pool at the mill dam pond to allow for fish passage above the pond and to plant native vegetation to provide bank stabilization at the pond site. NRCS and Americorps are currently surveying the concrete plume to determine where the baffles should be placed. WDFW has performed the engineering on the entire passage project, while Klickitat High School students will become involved with the monitoring component of the project.
