    Project Description
The stretch of Woodland Creek in the project area was once a pasture and the vegetation was almost completely removed down to the creek edge. The property has been converted to the Woodland Creek Community Park, a passive-use park owned by the City of Lacey. The project will establish 100 ft. buffers on both sides of the creek between mile 4.8 and 5.1 (approx. 280,000 sq. ft), and install a drip irrigation system. The creek is spring-fed, but frequently goes dry in the summer. An irrigation system will be installed in October of 1999 to help establish the vegetation, and tree planting will occur in April of 2000. The site will be maintained (mowing invasive weeds, watering, monitoring the irrigation system) by the City of Lacey Parks Department until the plants reach maturity and don't require regular maintenance.

Chinook, Chum, Coho, Cutthroat, and Steelhead spawn in Woodland Creek up to Draham Rd. at mile 2.8. Coho and Cutthroat also spawn between mile 2.8 and 4.2 at Lake Lois. Historically, salmonids were found all the way to Pattison Lake, 8 miles into the Woodland Creek system. Woodland Creek is currently on the 303(d) list for stream flow, temperature, bacteria, and turbidity. Revegetation of the riparian area should help address these problems by retaining rainwater, providing shade to the creek and discouraging Canada Geese from frequenting the fields adjacent to the creek.

The project was identified and prioritized by the SW ESU Thurston Co. Subgroup.
