    Project Description
The Tulalip Tribes Wildlife Program will protect and restore riparian and in-stream habitat-forming processes and function in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest by relocating beavers to headwater streams of the Snohomish Watershed. The project objective is to re-establish beaver colonies above or along approximately 1 mile (total) of streams in the upper Skykomish and upper Snoqualmie basins in order to improve stream habitat conditions where salmonids spawn and rear. Funds will be used to a) administer the project, b) construct beaver dam analogs to prepare sites for beaver reintroduction, c) trap nuisance beavers, d) care for beavers at holding facility, and e) relocate beavers to suitable habitat on USFS land. The presence of new beaver dams in these streams will not only hold water, but is also expected to change the timing of how that water exits the sites, seasonally. Beaver dams capture the energy of intense winter storms and hold water longer into the dry season. The results of a study conducted on the hydrologic benefits of the Tulalip Beaver Project found that “successful beaver relocations created 243 cubic meters of surface water storage per 100 meters of stream reach in the first year following relocation, and stored approximately 2.4 times as much groundwater as surface water per relocation reach. On average, stream reaches downstream of newly created beaver dams exhibited an average of 2.3 degrees celsius cooling effect in stream temperature during summer base flow conditions” (Dittbrenner, 2019). The Tribes expect these hydrologic benefits will trickle down the system, creating better conditions for Fall Chinook, Coho, Fall Chum, Winter and Summer Steelhead, and Bull Trout (WDFW SalmonScape) within or immediately downstream of relocation sites.

The Snohomish watershed is the second largest salmon producing watershed in Puget Sound. The goal of the project is to increase the number of beavers and their dams in the watershed to sustain salmon populations for commercial and recreational harvest by tribal and state anglers. The Wildlife Program will measure success of beaver and beaver-built dam retention at release sites for at least 9 months post-relocation and expect to increase the area of in-stream habitat at seven relocation sites.
