    Project Description
The San Juan Initiative develops a list of site specific recommendations to increase protection based on a thorough, community-based analysis of existing regulatory, voluntary, incentive and education protection programs. The Initiative is driven by local, state, federal and tribal policy makers; business representatives and private property owners in San Juan County affected by and interested in protection measures; land managers; and local leaders focused on preservation of ecosystems and natural resources. This group will link existing efforts and science to create a complete vision for protection and address key gaps between Marine Resource Committee work, terrestrial work, existing research, and the San Juan salmon recovery plan. Their work will evaluate the effectiveness of and gaps in regulatory, voluntary, incentive and education programs directed at protecting the San Juan archipelago. It will deliver a set of site specific actions responding to identified gaps along with commitment from key parties to implement the recommendations. Lastly, it will bring existing scientific information into one usable and transparent system. The combination and analysis of this existing information in a process that engages the public and decision-makers advances a key gap in the San Juan Salmon Recovery Chapter.
Timeframe and Cost: $500,000; September 2006 to Spring 2008
Scope: Terrestrial, marine shorelines, and marine waters, Ecosystem based, Community (San Juan County) based
